Peruvian
Army trains soldiers by killing dogs
Disturbing
new footage unearthed by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) has revealed
members of the Peruvian Army committing horrific
acts of cruelty and the bloody slaughter of a dog in order to train their soldiers how to kill
in war.
The hand you can't see is
holding a knife to stab and slash the helpless victim
The
video, shot undercover for WSPA member society Amigos de los Animales, shows army rangers
Otorongo Command, Group no.125, in military training. After diving through a hoop of fire, they
charge at a dog that is tied,
spread-eagled, between two vertical poles. The men then take turns to slash and stab the dog, as
it yelps and struggles to escape. This continues until the dog dies. It is then torn to pieces
and bits of it eaten.
death
must've been a merciful release
Major General Peter Davies, Director General of WSPA, said: "Such a military training
method, whereby great suffering is inflicted on a helpless sentient animal, is unnecessary,
totally unacceptable, and has no place in any civilised armed force."
Gerardo Huertas, WSPA's Regional Director for Latin America added: "The grotesque scenes of
dogs being mutilated until they die, by young members of the military covered with the blood of
these innocent creatures, shows that we have to redouble our efforts in order to fight against
animal crimes all over the world. People that are trained to protect the civil, religious or
democratic acts of a nation should never be required to behave in such a way."
WSPA is urging the Peruvian government and army to discipline those involved and stop these
needless acts immediately. The release of this startling footage highlights WSPA's ongoing
campaign against cruelty. As yet, it is not known whether similar practices take place in other
parts of Latin America or the scale of the atrocity.
